Google told investors that AI Mode earns less per query than classic search, and its search revenue growth has now slowed for a second straight quarter.
Put that next to Reddit's Q3 call. CEO Steve Huffman said AI Mode "does not drive traffic," and Reddit disclosed search referrals down by more than a million a day on average in October. If Reddit cannot get the click, an independent hotel in Lucca will not either. Skift Research adds the uncomfortable part: AI already accounts for 21% of inspiration-stage touchpoints, and across three models 29% of strong destination matches went unrecommended. Your visibility now depends on how third parties describe you.
The chains are tightening their own funnels in response. BWH Hotels becomes WorldHotels, with 4,000+ properties and 18 brands under one masterbrand and one loyalty programme. Hyatt posted RevPAR up 7.2% and a pipeline up 12.1%. Scale buys direct demand when the open web stops sending it. Investors are not funding the alternative. Crunchbase counts $2.2 billion for travel startups in the first three quarters, the lowest since 2018, so independents will choose from fewer, bigger vendors.
Distribution risk is physical too. Seville hotels took a wave of cancellations over the All Saints' weekend after the Urda accident cut high-speed rail to Andalusia, a single-corridor dependency every DMO should map. Canada's Competition Bureau also warns the wider Air Canada-United cooperation could lift fares on ten transborder routes.
My read for the next 6-12 months: independents lose organic Google share they will not win back. The ones that hold up will have detailed content on OTAs, review sites and guides, plus a booking engine an AI agent can actually reach.
Worth watching: Officina Turistica's analysis of European hotels that AI answers surface but cannot book. Accor's 485,000 paying loyalty members in Asia Pacific matter as a direct-channel play, though the figures are Accor's own and renewals are the real test. Wyndham's Homes & Havens shows hotel loyalty moving onto rental turf.
At WTM London this week, ask every vendor one question: when an AI recommends my hotel, how does the guest book it?
Key questions this week
Does Google AI Mode send traffic to hotel and travel websites?
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said on the company's Q3 call that Google AI Mode "does not drive traffic," and Reddit reported search referrals down by more than a million a day on average in October. Google has also told investors that AI Mode earns less per query than classic search. If a platform of Reddit's size cannot get the click, an independent hotel is unlikely to either.
How can independent hotels stay visible when AI tools recommend destinations?
Skift Research found that AI already accounts for 21% of inspiration-stage travel touchpoints, and across three models 29% of strong destination matches went unrecommended. Because visibility now depends on how third parties describe a property, independents need detailed content on OTAs, review sites and guides. They also need a booking engine that an AI agent can actually reach.
Why should DMOs map single transport corridor dependencies for their destination?
After the Urda accident cut high-speed rail to Andalusia, Seville hotels took a wave of cancellations over the All Saints' weekend. A destination reached mainly through one corridor can lose bookings quickly when that link fails. Air access carries similar risk, as Canada's Competition Bureau warns that wider Air Canada-United cooperation could raise fares on ten transborder routes.
