INDUSTRY REFERENCE
Travel & tourism industry glossary
Plain-English definitions of the terms that run the travel industry — distribution, hotel performance, destination management and AI — each linked to related TourismIntel coverage.
ADR (Average Daily Rate)
The average rental revenue earned per occupied hotel room per day, calculated as room revenue divided by rooms sold. Together with occupancy, ADR drives RevPAR and is one of the three core hotel performance metrics tracked by revenue managers and investors.

AEO / GEO (Answer & Generative Engine Optimization)
The practice of optimizing content to be cited by AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) rather than just ranked in classic search results. For travel brands this increasingly determines visibility, as a growing share of trip research starts inside AI assistants.

Agentic AI
AI systems that autonomously plan and execute multi-step tasks — searching, comparing, booking and re-booking travel — instead of only answering questions. Agentic AI is reshaping distribution: suppliers must make inventory readable and bookable by machines, not just by humans.

Attribute-Based Selling (ABS)
A hotel retailing model where guests build their stay from individual attributes — view, floor, bed type, early check-in — instead of fixed room categories. ABS requires modern PMS/CRS platforms and is a key trend in hospitality e-commerce.

Bleisure
Travel that blends business and leisure, such as extending a work trip through the weekend. Post-pandemic flexible work made bleisure a measurable demand segment that hotels and destinations target with tailored offers and longer-stay packages.

Channel Manager
Software that synchronizes a property's rates and availability across all distribution channels — OTAs, GDS, metasearch and the hotel's own website — in real time, preventing overbookings and rate discrepancies.

Direct Booking
A reservation made through a hotel's or airline's own website or app rather than a third-party intermediary. Direct bookings avoid OTA commissions and give the supplier ownership of guest data, which is why 'book direct' strategies dominate hospitality marketing.

DMO (Destination Management Organization)
The organization responsible for promoting and managing a destination — a tourism board, convention bureau or regional agency. Modern DMOs increasingly work with data platforms and AI to measure visitor flows, manage overtourism and target marketing spend.

Dynamic Pricing
Adjusting prices continuously based on demand, competitor rates, events and booking pace — standard practice in airlines and hotels, now increasingly AI-driven. Modern revenue management systems reprice thousands of times per day.

GDS (Global Distribution System)
Legacy networks — Amadeus, Sabre, Travelport — that connect airlines, hotels and car rental inventory to travel agencies and corporate booking tools worldwide. GDSs still process a large share of business travel, even as NDC and direct APIs erode their role.

Generative AI
AI models that produce text, images, audio or itineraries from prompts. In travel it powers trip-planning assistants, automated customer service, marketing content and translation — and raises new questions about accuracy and brand visibility inside AI answers.

LLM (Large Language Model)
The class of AI models (GPT, Claude, Gemini) trained on vast text corpora that underpin chatbots, agents and content tools. For travel companies, LLMs are both a capability to adopt and a new distribution surface where their content must be discoverable.

Look-to-Book Ratio
The number of searches or visits it takes to generate one booking. A core conversion metric for OTAs and airline websites; AI-driven personalization and agentic booking are expected to compress it dramatically.

Metasearch
Comparison engines — Google Hotels, Kayak, Skyscanner, Trivago — that aggregate prices from many booking sites and sell referral traffic. Metasearch sits between search engines and OTAs in the distribution funnel and is being reshaped by AI answer engines.

MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions)
The business-events segment of travel. MICE demand is a major driver for city hotels and convention destinations, with its own booking cycles, buyers (event planners) and industry trade shows.

NDC (New Distribution Capability)
An IATA XML/API standard that lets airlines distribute rich, dynamic offers (seats, bundles, ancillaries) directly to sellers, bypassing legacy GDS constraints. NDC adoption is one of the industry's longest-running distribution battles.

Occupancy Rate
The percentage of available rooms sold in a period — rooms sold divided by rooms available. Alongside ADR it determines RevPAR and signals market health for hotels and short-term rentals.

OTA (Online Travel Agency)
Digital intermediaries — Booking.com, Expedia, Airbnb, Trip.com — that sell travel inventory online in exchange for commissions. OTAs dominate leisure distribution in many markets, and the direct-vs-OTA balance is a permanent strategic question for suppliers.

Overtourism
When visitor volumes exceed a destination's physical, environmental or social carrying capacity — crowding out residents and degrading the experience. Destinations respond with tourist taxes, caps, timed entry and demand-spreading strategies, increasingly informed by visitor-flow data.

PMS (Property Management System)
The operational core system of a hotel: reservations, check-in/out, housekeeping, billing and guest profiles. Cloud PMS platforms act as the hub that channel managers, RMS and guest-experience tools plug into.

RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)
An AI architecture that grounds LLM answers in a curated knowledge base retrieved at query time, reducing hallucinations. Travel brands use RAG to build assistants that answer from their own verified content — policies, inventory, destination data.

Rate Parity
The contractual or strategic practice of keeping the same room rate across all distribution channels. Parity clauses between hotels and OTAs are a recurring regulatory battleground in Europe and shape how hotels can reward direct bookers.

Revenue Management (RMS)
The discipline — and the software category (Revenue Management System) — of selling the right product to the right customer at the right time and price. Modern RMS platforms use machine learning demand forecasting to set prices automatically.

RevPAR (Revenue per Available Room)
The headline hotel performance metric: room revenue divided by total available rooms (or ADR × occupancy). RevPAR lets analysts compare hotels of different sizes and is the number quoted in nearly every hotel earnings report.

Smart Destination
A destination that uses data platforms, IoT sensors and AI to manage visitor flows, sustainability and services in real time. Smart-destination programs are a major investment line for DMOs and national tourism strategies, notably in Spain and Italy.

Sustainable Tourism
Tourism that accounts for its environmental, social and economic impacts — from aviation decarbonization and hotel energy use to community benefit. Regulation (CSRD, green claims rules) is turning sustainability from marketing into measurable reporting.

A per-night or per-entry levy charged to visitors, used by cities to fund services or temper overtourism. Amounts and rules vary widely — from Venice's access fee to nightly city taxes across Europe — and change frequently, affecting pricing and demand.
