What the report covers

VisitBritain analysed inbound business visits to the UK using International Passenger Survey data from 2016, 2018, 2019, 2022–2024. The research covers the business events sector—trade shows, conferences, corporate meetings, incentive trips and association congresses—and examines visit volume, expenditure, delegate behaviour and trip extensions. Supporting data from industry bodies including UKEVENTS, ICCA and SASIE provide sector valuation and event counts.

Key findings

Business visits accounted for 17% of all inbound visits in 2024, a total of 6.8 million visits contributing £5.9 billion—18% of all inbound spend. Despite year-on-year volume growth of 5% from 2023, business visits had not quite recovered to pre-COVID levels. Business visitors had shorter stays but higher average nightly spend than leisure visitors, making them a high-value segment.

Within business visits, MICE and business events formed a significant segment: 38% of business visits (2.6 million) were categorised as MICE, generating 47% of business spend (£2.8 billion). Conferences, conventions and congresses attracted 755,000 visits and £796 million spend; meetings of 10–20 people generated 772,000 visits and £794 million; exhibitions and trade shows accounted for 325,000 visits and £352 million.

Delegate spend varies sharply by origin. International business event delegates spent an average of £1,824, compared to £872 for European delegates and £328 for UK delegates—a 4:1 ratio favouring international over domestic visitors. Delegates from outside Europe spent more than twice the European average. Average spend also differed by event type: association events (£854) exceeded corporate events (£651), and incentive trips were highest at £2,113 per delegate.

Trip extensions significantly amplified economic value. Delegates extending their stay for leisure purposes increased their total UK spend by a factor of 2.5, reaching an average of £1,760 compared to £714 without extension. Networking and collaboration (64%), learning (53%) and career development (33%) were the primary motives for event attendance.

The broader UK events industry was valued at £61.65 billion in 2024. Business events contributed £33.6 billion: conferences and meetings £16.3 billion, exhibitions and trade shows £10.9 billion, business travel meetings £4.0 billion and incentive travel £2.4 billion. The UK recorded 485 international association meetings (ICCA ranking: 5th globally), hosted 1,145 exhibitions and conferences with 7.2 million visitors, and an estimated 1.08 million conferences and meetings welcoming 95.4 million delegates.

Why it matters

DMOs & destinations

Business events generate high per-visitor revenue (£1,824 for international delegates) and often extend to leisure stays, multiplying spend 2.5×. UK rankings—5th globally for association meetings, hosting 1.08 million conferences—signal competitive positioning. DMOs should prioritize international delegate attraction and leisure trip packaging to maximize economic impact.

Hotels & hospitality

MICE visitors spend significantly more per night than leisure guests and book multiple nights. International delegates (£1,824 average) and incentive trips (£2,113) represent premium revenue streams. Extended stays—averaging £1,760—offer occupancy and F&B uplift. Targeting events with networking and learning motives (64% and 53%) enables upselling opportunities and corporate partnerships.

Travel tech & distribution

Business events generate 2.6 million UK visits annually with 47% of business travel spend. Platforms serving conference, incentive and exhibition bookings access high-value, repeat-booking segments. Trip extensions (2.5× spend multiplier) signal cross-selling opportunity for leisure add-ons. International delegates dominate value; geo-targeted marketing and multi-currency payment systems are operationally critical.

Methodology and limits

Data derives from the International Passenger Survey (IPS), conducted by the UK Office for National Statistics across 2016, 2018, 2019, 2022–2024, capturing inbound business visitor motivations. The webinar and delegate spend reports integrate multiple industry sources: UKEVENTS 2024, ICCA 2024 rankings, SASIE Size and Scale Index, and the UK Conference and Meeting Survey. Figures for event counts, delegate numbers and sector valuations are estimates from industry bodies; IPS figures are observed survey results. The brief is based on publicly available summaries.
