Travelers are running roughly two years ahead of the travel industry on AI adoption. That gap is the whole story this week. Read it alongside the Mastercard Economics Institute's "The New Travel Equation: Macro, Machines, Motivation," which puts machines in the title next to geopolitics and consumer motivation, and the picture sharpens: demand is being reshaped by tools our own sector is still piloting. Then add the productivity research circulating this week, where novice workers gained 34% from generative AI while experienced staff barely moved. AI compresses the skill premium. A three-person DMO in Álava, now building a smart destination platform with regional operators, can produce planning and content work that used to require an agency retainer. The advantage is shifting from who has the best team to who deploys fastest. My read for the next six to twelve months: the Mastercard framing means pricing and distribution decisions will increasingly respond to AI-mediated demand signals rather than historical booking curves, and anyone still forecasting on last year's patterns will misprice a full season. Expect hoteliers to lose the first click to assistants they do not control, and expect the vendors selling "AI-powered" dashboards without a data layer underneath to get found out by procurement teams that have learned the vocabulary. Small destinations with clean, structured, machine-readable data will outperform larger ones sitting on PDFs. The uncomfortable part is that closing a two-year gap requires shipping something imperfect this quarter, not commissioning another strategy. What are you willing to put live before the end of the summer?
